The past decade has seen an explosion in fixed and mobile wireless infrastructure options for delivering IP services to consumers and businesses. Wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) have capitalized upon the availability of these new technologies to successfully compete against incumbent wire line service providers and ISPs. But the price of competition is high, so WISPs must drive down the cost of infrastructure in order to remain both competitive and profitable.
As is the case for all services providers, WISPs must backhaul the traffic generated by consumer and business customers to the core network point of presence (POP). In addressing that problem, WISPs must minimize their backhaul expense while at the same time ensuring the quality of service necessary to minimize churn. Often, WISPs must also contend with an inherited (WAN) infrastructure built on analog or synchronous TDM. In many cases, this TDM backhaul is served by OPEX-intensive and poorly scalable leased lines.
Put simply, WISPs need to leverage the most cost-effective means available to deliver subscriber-generated Ethernet traffic to the core network. The ability to transport IP/Ethernet traffic natively over microwave radio provides an alternative to leased lines that is not only cost-effective but also scalable, extremely flexible, and essential to their business. And the ability to minimize site costs through the use of small footprint, spectrally efficient microwave systems is the best way to meet payback and ROI targets.

Exalt's point-to-point microwave radio systems such as the new ExtendAir line are uniquely suited to address the deployment requirements, the feature set and the platform flexibility that WISPs need to better differentiate their services and profitably manage their business. Exalt systems offer:
