Fiber-based optical transmission has been deployed widely in the core and metro network portions of both wireless and fixed operators worldwide, providing unprecedented levels of backhaul capacity for telecommunications service providers and, indeed, supporting the tremendous growth of the Internet over the past decade.
The use of fiber in access networks has been far more limited, however, primarily due to the high fixed costs associated with trenching, especially in urban environments. In fact, of the 750,000 U.S. commercial buildings with twenty or more employees, only 13.4% have fiber access. So, although the demand for both PSTN and Internet services continues to rise geometrically, additional techniques are needed to cost-effectively and scalable deliver service to the edge of the network.
